Halep to Undergo Nasal Operation

Simona Halep is set to undergo surgery to eradicate health problems affecting her performance over the last few weeks. Ranked as number 2, Simona suffered a first-round defeat after she received a beating from Zhang Shuai at the Australian Open.

Simona will miss next week’s Fed Cup match against a motivated Czech Republic, including this year’s Doha as well as Dubai tournaments, but she hopes to return in time to defend her crown in the Indian Wells tournament in March. Following medical advice, she will undergo surgery in the next few days, she said it was the most frustrating periods for personally her, she has been unable to stay healthy or train. She also posted on Facebook that she has been suffering from infections in her nose, ear, and stomach since the start of the year. Due to constantly being on antibiotics, training was difficult.

Halep said she gave the Australian Open her best shot, but the infection currently present in her body unfortunately made her situation worse as she pushed herself to compete in a Grand Slam. She will now undergo surgery in order to deal with the ongoing problem with her nose and has received advice that success is most likely. She agreed to take it slow, but still hopes she would have recovered in time to resume training and have the chance to compete in the Indian Wells to defend her title.

Zhang beat Simone Halep 6-4, 6-3 and that was a story in itself as Zhang is rated number 133 and defeated the world number 2 ranked Simona Halep in straight sets in the first round of the Australian Open. Zhang made her way into a main draw 14 times and never got a win, she has not won a set in the majors since Wimbledon 2011. Now she was famous and celebrated her victory while clutching a ticket to the second round.
